Hydration status analysis

Fast hydration measurement using Raman spectroscopy

Fast, non-invasive hydration status assessment

Water plays a fundamental role in human physiology, accounting for up to 60% of adult body mass. Both dehydration and overhydration are associated with impaired physical and cognitive performance and with a wide range of medical conditions. Yet, despite its importance, hydration status remains difficult to assess objectively, particularly in a rapid and non-invasive manner.

HydRaman is a research technology under development by RiverD International with the clear ambition of enabling objective, non-invasive measurement of a person’s hydration status.
While HydRaman is currently a research tool, it is being developed with the long-term goal of becoming a clinically deployable medical device suitable for routine use in hospital environments.

Raman-based hydration analysis

HydRaman measures dermal water concentration directly from light scattered from the dermis. Water is quantified at the molecular level using Raman spectroscopy, without the need for blood sampling or other invasive procedures. The central premise of HydRaman is that dermal water concentration reflects whole-body hydration and can therefore serve as a quantitative hydration biomarker.

By combining optical measurement with fast data acquisition, HydRaman enables repeated, in-vivo assessments, making it suitable for monitoring hydration-related changes over time across a wide range of study designs. This capability supports investigation of hydration dynamics, rather than relying on isolated, snapshot measurements.

Research and clinical use

HydRaman is being explored in multiple research contexts where accurate hydration assessment is critical.
A proof-of-concept HydRaman device has been developed and is currently used in exploratory studies across medical research and sports and performance science, supporting fast, non-invasive hydration measurements in a wide range of research applications.
Medical conditions
A wide range of medical conditions and acute events can lead to dehydration or overhydration.
Reliable hydration status assessment supports timely intervention, improved patient monitoring, and better-informed clinical decision-making in research settings.
Healthy ageing
Dehydration remains a major and often preventable contributor to complications and hospital admissions in ageing populations.
HydRaman supports research into early identification of hydration imbalance, longitudinal monitoring, and preventive strategies aimed at healthy ageing.
Sports and performance
In sports and performance science, hydration is a critical determinant of performance, recovery, and safety, yet is rarely measured directly.
HydRaman enables objective investigation of hydration-related changes alongside other physiological parameters, supporting research into dehydration, overhydration, heat stress, and recovery dynamics.
